On the Trash Heap of History: Vertical Navigation

Web design is still a new field. Though trillions of dollars of commerce flow annually and millions of man-hours are spent daily online it's only been two decades since web design really began. Web Design is still the wild west and new information about what works and what doesn't is always being discovered. One of the mainstays of early webdesign, the vertical navigation menu, has been found wanting and is slowly being discarded on the net. Why?

Here are 3 reasons:

  • It's Not Natural

79% of users read websites this way.

In a few seconds - a glance or three - users evaluate websites following an F pattern.

eye-tracking patterns on websites

1st Glance: Users read across the top in a horizontal line.
2nd Glance: Users read across in another horizontal line, looking for headers and highlighted words.
Final Glance: Users take a vertical glance of the left side of a website.

Why Jireh, Why Internet Marketing

My name is Heston Glenn. I am the owner of Jireh Web Design and we want to make your life easier. How do we do that? We do it by helping you create websites and internet marketing campaigns that sell for you 24 hours a day to an unlimited number of people at a time. Few, if any of you, are experts on internet marketing or web design and if you tried to do this yourself your life would be miserable. If you don't you'll be missing out on profit.

Add your business to Google Places

Part of making life easier is making it easier for potential customers to find your business. Starting in June, I’ll be presenting ONE easy way to improve your online business per month. This ONE easy thing won’t take more than an hour or two, giving you the opportunity to make your online presence better each month.

ONE way to improve your online presence in June:

Epiphany

Today I had an epiphany. You don’t want to know about web design. you hired me so you didn't have to learn about it. And like you, there are certain things I don’t want to learn about. I like steak, but I don’t want to learn about how cows become steak. I am interested in learning how to pick out a good steak. So this month, instead of telling you about web design, I am going to tell you how to pick out a good web design “steak”.

Improve your web site performance with one simple step

“We don’t know who discovered water, but we know it wasn’t the fish.”
- Marshall Mcluhan, Communications Theorist and Social Reformer.

It is a scientific fact: What Is Observed, Improves. Why? Because when we pay attention to what is going on we begin to notice what is going right, and do more of it; we also notice what is going wrong, and do less of it.

To observe your online effectiveness, it is important to know a few key facts:
1. How many people are coming to my site?
2. How are they getting here?
3. How much is it costing me to get them here?

Adam Smith on why you should get Jireh to do your web design and marketing

An acquiantance of mine was raised with the mantra "Don't do anything you can hire someone else to do." Adam Smith, the father of economics said the same thing when talking about division of labor. Adam studied men making nails in 18th Century England. One man can only make a few dozen nails in a day by himself, but if he only does one part of a process (divides the labor), a team of men can make hundreds more nails per person per day.
